Sports Matter is a movement or meme (a viral joke that spreads really quickly) that Justin White, Senior, started at the end of last semester, in an attempt to point out the obvious sport culture that surrounds Vaca High. Sports Matter’s message is that if a student plays sports at Vaca High they matter more than a student that doesn’t. Playing sports at Vaca High gives a student more privilege on campus and the teachers and administration will be more lenient with them, in White’s opinion. Many people believe that football is the school’s main source of income and without it we would crumble.
From what we’ve learned from members of the Sports Matter movement is that the movement isn’t meant to bring hate to sports, but shine a light on the possible unfair bias Vaca High has when it comes to supporting its students. Sports, and the football program especially, appear to get better treatment over more creative talents like art. Niko Menicou a senior at Vaca High and member of the Sports Matter movement, explained, “I think Sports Matter is great because it shines a spotlight on students that don’t often get recognized for their abilities and talents besides sports. GO SPORTS MATTER!”.
In reality, without sports, Vaca High would lose a large source of funding for the school, like the brand new workout equipment. Even though Sports Matter’s ideas are serious, it’s still meant as a joke. Justin White and his group don’t take Sports Matter seriously at all.
With that said, if you play sports at Vaca High, don’t take offense to this. It’s just a joke and remember ... sports matter!
