You know something is wrong when it’s a pleasant Saturday evening, and you hear your mother say to a stranger, “Can I have two tickets to Sausage Fest, please”. It goes without saying, that it’s awkward enough having to hear that sentence come from your dear, sweet mother, let alone sit through the entirety of “Sausage Party” with her!
This popular animated summer feature, aptly rated R, starring many popular comedians including the voices of Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, and Jonah Hill, follows the journey of sentient food as they attempt to get selected by people to be taken home, but they don’t know what awaits them beyond the doors of the supermarket. “Sausage Party” shares many key elements of any adorable animated feature, including a very endearing musical opening sequence that introduces the audience to the entire plot of the movie, while also somehow keeping the characters singing the song in the dark about the horrors that await. This embarrassingly funny movie, that should never be seen with any family member EVER, combines deceptively cute animation, the foul mouths of some our country’s best film comedians, the language that sailors dare not speak, and an incredibly violent and inappropriate ending that will leave you laughing, crying, very uncomfortable, or a combination of the three. It is worth emphasizing to not take children to this movie, as it will lead to an uncomfortable conversation similar to, “How are babies made” but involving all of the food from a supermarket rather than birds and bees.
At the end of the day, “Sausage Party” was a downright hilarious experience, and well worth the silent car ride home, but for the love of you, your family, and for your own sanity: Viewer beware! Don’t watch this movie with your family!
