The Garden is an American experimental rock duo from Orange County, California who started making music in 2011. The Garden’s name represents growing and progression like an actual garden. The band consists of the twin brothers Wyatt (bass and vocals) and Fletcher Shears(drums). Vada Vada is their own genre and represents free creativity, which disregards all ideals and genres. The band has abstract spoken-word pieces, surrealist verses and a bundle of abnormal genre-jumping. They have released their albums and EP’s through the labels Epitaph Records and Burger Records.
When interviewed by Emily Dermott from Interview Magazine, the twins were questioned about their growth, Wyatt responded with, “We've been through a lot since that first record. As people, we've grown a lot. Musically, obviously we play constantly, and tour a lot, so we've grown in that way as well. I think it shows on this album [Haha] —the culmination of growing, understanding the business that we're diving into right now.” Fletcher continues on with “It shows little hints of personal maturity, but also a pretty solid progression music-wise as well. Growing as people, being on the road 24/7 for three years—I don't think people realize how often we're actually away from home, on the road, playing shows almost every night. Then being home, reflecting, and learning about yourself.” Wyatt finishes up with, “You learn a lot, you see a lot. That affects the music for sure.”
One of my favorite songs from the most recent album Haha, “Egg” overall portrays their life and how there will always be a couple of bumps on the road. Wyatt Shears starts off the song with “I feel like I haven’t trudged/ But what has changed has been enough /I couldn’t grasp what wasn’t there until I felt the dunces glare” He continues on with,“These fragile eggs while likely crack /Unless you pick another track /I help myself /I straighten my back/Advance forward I won’t look back /I break this bubble that blocked my sense” This means that they are going to continuously move forward to do what’s best for them.
