On August 20th, Frank Ocean released his long anticipated new album Blonde and it’s actually amazing. In all honesty, I hadn’t even bothered to listen to it until I volunteered to write an album review on it and I’m obsessed. Completely obsessed. I haven’t really liked a complete album this much in a while. In my opinion, it was worth the four year wait.
The album Blonde was originally assumed to be titled Boys Don’t Cry. However, we were given the album Blonde, a magazine by the name of Boys Don’t Cry, and a visual album, Endless, which was released as a nearly hour long music video, containing an album’s worth of new compositions.
I really enjoyed most of the album (even though a few critics disagree because “it didn’t live up to the hype” or something lame like that). I love the whole album but my top five songs on Blonde (in order) are probably “Pink +White”, “Nights”, “Solo”, “Godspeed”, and “Ivy”. “Ivy” is the most accessible (it’s on YouTube for free) and therefore adds to the reason it’s so popular. It incorporates a heavy pop influence which makes it a pretty universal song. No matter what genre of music your cup of tea is, you’ll probably enjoy “Ivy”. “Godspeed” is a slow, more melodic song than others on the album. I really love this song because it’s so relaxing and Frank Ocean really shows off his vocal talents. “Solo” incorporates accent sounds but it’s mostly vocal (just like most songs on the album). I think it’s one of my favorites because it’s different and there aren’t many songs like this in general. “Nights” has a lot of pauses in the music and has so many different styles in itself that it creates a really unique feel. I think because of that I can listen to it over and over again and never get bored. Last but not least “Pink + White” is my overall favorite. This is the first song I heard on the album and it’s my go to song. It has a more melodic style with vocals, guitar, and piano.
Frank Ocean incorporated many different vibes and styles in this album and it is one of the few albums that I could just sit and listen to without getting bored. All of the different elements really complement each other making for an amazing completed album. If you haven’t heard it yet, download it now on iTunes! And FYI, the album does include explicit songs so if that’s a problem you might want to individually download the songs with the clean versions!
