Being someone that isn’t too much into mainstream rap and hip-hop, I was pleasantly surprised to hear Kanye West’s newest CD, “Late Registration”. My hip-hop desires go as far as Sage Francis, Mos Def, and a little Mac Dre, so call me uneducated on the subject. The thing that kept me listening was the fact that Kanye’s CD wasn’t cliché radio rap. It has the melody and rhythm that isn’t heard so much in this genre. Kanye West sings about, for the most part, real life issues. Believe it or not, his experience goes further than hoes and 40’s. Kanye raps about urban difficulties and basically being put down by the Man.
As I sorted through the music section of Target to find “Late Registration,” sales associate and fellow Senior, Matt Lopez helped me find it. He informed me that tons and tons of people had been coming in to get Kanye’s new CD. “Even parents have been coming in to get it,” he said, which was not something I was expecting to hear. 860,000 copies were sold, and it got No. 1 on The Billboard. This is nearly twice as much as his last CD debut in 2004, “The College Dropout”.
For those that have just heard the hit song, “Gold Digger”, I assure you, the rest the CD is 10 times better. It shows Kanye’s more original musical talent. If you’re into rap and hip-hop, you’ll agree, “Late Registration” is one CD worth listening to. If you’re not into this genre as much, it is still definitely worth checking out.
