Spotlight on Student Council

Vacaville High School’s Student Council will be conducting several exciting events this year.  In November there will be a blood drive for students who are at least sixteen.  Another event that will be taking place in November is the Black and Blue Bowl Rally.  This has never been done in the past and is expected to be a huge hit this winter.  Speaking of winter – it’s time for all you girls to start shopping for dresses for Winter Ball, put on by the Junior class, coming up in December! Oh, and ladies in March be thinking about reserving your seat for Mr. GQ – you don’t want to miss out on all of that hot action.  Also in March, Student Council is thinking about putting on a Sadey Hawkins dance, however, it is not yet finalized.  For those of you who don’t know what a Sadey Hawkins dance is, it is when the girls get to ask the guys to the dance.
During the entire year, Student Council also hopes to put on more lunchtime activities because of the closed campus issue.  We might even have Jamba Juice come to our school again because it was such a big hit last year.  Along with all of these great school activities, Student Council is also going to work on campus beautification.  They want to make the school look better to the community. As Lauren Varga says “It’s not the big things that make what we do great, it’s the little things”. They also want to work on getting students into different types of community service outside of school such as working with the elderly and cleaning up our community.
When asked what activity she was most excited about, ASB (associated student body) Vice President Lauren Varga said that she was fired up about the Black and Blue Bowl Rally because it is the first one.  She hopes that it will not generate negativity towards Will C. Wood, but just an overall “pro Vaca High” vibe.  She explained that everyone that attends Vaca High naturally has some rivalry in them towards other schools in our community, especially Wood, so that should make the rally extra fun.  When asked the same question, head of the ASB Mr. Alongi commented that he just enjoys it when the “kids put a lot of effort into something and it works out with a big pay off.”  What direction is Student Council going in this year?  Mr. Alongi wants to stick with traditions that people enjoy and expect but also try and make new ones to try and reach out to more kids; Lauren feels the same way.  She wants to hear people say, “Oh, I didn’t know that Student Council did that!”  Next, Lauren shared one of her ideas for a new activity this year.  She wants to get people involved in out-of-school community service and make it a fun thing to do.  Mr. Alongi didn’t share any of his ideas because he wants all of the ideas to come from the students themselves.  He wants to see them try traditional activities but carry them out in untraditional ways. Mr. Alongi likens this years student council to a quote from the movie “Field of Dreams” that goes “If you build it, they will come”. By this he means that if the student council creates an atmosphere in which students have fun then they will become involved in school activities. This year sounds like it is going to be extremely exciting so make sure to be at all of the activities and have lots of fun.  We’ll see you there!
