Remember when you were a little kid, back when there were no worries about homework or what you looked like? When you couldn’t wait to sit down in front of the television and play your Nintendo system. How many of you veteran gamers remember the Nintendo game Duck Hunt? Duck hunt was paired with the classic video game Super Mario Brothers. Duck Hunt and Super Mario Brothers became one of the highest selling games of its time.
Released in 1984 by Nintendo, Duck Hunt was one of the first Nintendo platforms to use the “light gun.” The basic idea of the game was pretty simple. You were a duck hunter armed with a pistol and your trusty dog. You had three shots to shoot one or two of the ducks each round. After ten rounds of duck hunting, you went to the shooting range and shot at clay pigeons for another ten rounds, without your canine companion. The game still is rather fun and satisfying initially, but gets old quickly especially if you are use to playing today’s first person shooting games. The sound effects are much you would expect for a game from the early 1980’s; they are primitive by today’s standards. While the game play and graphics are simple, Duck Hunt remains an entertaining game to play every once in a while.
Strangely enough, one of the never-ending quests of dedicated duck hunters is to try and find a way to shoot the dog. This is actually impossible unless you go on the Internet and find a newer version where you’re only shooting the dog. Duck Hunt makes up for not letting us shoot the dog by providing us with the target practice game. For this portion of the game you shoot little disks flying toward you as fast as you can, improving your hand-to-eye coordination. Overall, little kids loved the game. It was a big hit, big seller, and lots of fun.
