Four girls living in LA with nothing in common except for the fact that they all share a secret. These four girls are all fifteen year olds who are meant to save the world from an evil few have heard of or ever will for that matter. This evil force named the Atrox is so old that it tempted Lucifer to his fall from heaven. The Atrox prays on the hope of humans stealing it away and leaving them to wander in a world where nothing is possible and the only time they can feel anything other then loss is when they are stealing the hope of others This is the evil these four teenage girls are meant to protect us from but they are not just ordinary girls they are Daughters of the Moon.
Each Daughter of the Moon; Vanessa, Catty, Jimena, and Serena was given a power at birth from the Greek goddess of the moon, Selene. These girls are destined to protect hope from the Atrox just s Selene did when Pandora released hope, along with all the evils of the world, so many years ago. The four girls’ powers fit perfectly with their individual personality in most cases. Catty is impetuous and artistic making her the perfect girl for the most wild power, the ability to travel back and forth through time. Serena likes to understand people and know what makes them tick therefore reading and controlling people’s minds is the perfect gift for her. Jimena, who used to be in a local gang, is good at knowing when to trust her instincts which seeing the future helps her do. Vanessa’s power seems to be the only one that isn’t really a good match. Vanessa simply longs for a normal life with a cute boyfriend but her power to become invisible often stops her from getting these wishes, especially since she has little ability when it comes to controlling her power. The girls’ personalities all balance out in the end especially within the two sets of best friends. Catty and Vanessa, who have been best friends since they were little, are definite yin and vang pieces. Jimena and Serena have only become best friends since discovering their destinies.
There are two other characters that become very important to the daughters of the moon that you will meet in the first book of the series. First there is Maggie a woman had been alive since ancient Greek times and becomes both a mentor and a grandmother figure to the girls. Maggie tells the girls of their destiny and helps them to develop and understand their powers. Another important character is Stanton, a bad boy one of the daughters can’t help but fall for even if he is her sworn enemy. Stanton is not only a follower of the Atrox he is a very high ranking immortal. However, as the series continues we find that there is more then meets the eyes when it comes to Stanton especially once we learn the heartbreaking tale of how he came to be a follower.
Each book focuses on one character, most of the time it is a Daughter of the Moon but there has been a book about Maggie as well as one primarily about Stanton. The first book Goddess of the Night is mostly about Vanessa and what happens that causes her to find out that she and Catty are Daughters of the Moon. At the beginning of each book there is also a little opening story from Greek mythology.
The Daughters of the moon series is very well written by a little known author by the name of Lynne Ewing. She does a wonderful job of painting a picture that makes it easy to visualize exactly what each girl looks like right down to their facial expression. Even though the book is well written the editing seems to get worse with every book. Right now there are twelve books in the series and two books from Lynne Ewing’s spin of series Sons of the Dark. If you enjoy the Daughters of the moon books Sons of the Dark is a definite must read but you shouldn’t start the Sons of the Dark series until you have read at least the first eleven daughters of the moon books. You will need some information in the eleventh book to understand what the Sons of the Dark books are really about.
